How Can Coaching Help?

My 1:1 coaching is for illustrators at every stage, whether you're just getting started or a seasoned pro. What my clients have in common is that they're passionate about illustration, eager to grow, and looking for experienced outside perspective to help them get there.

Portfolio Reviews

Your illustration portfolio has one job: finding great clients! But what to show? What not to show? And how? A portfolio review will help you make these decisions with more confidence.

A review with me is always honest, thoughtful and respectful. I take time to view your work before we meet and come prepared with my assessment of your strengths and clear recommendations for improvement.

Creative Unblocking

Creative block happens! It doesn't matter if you're just starting out or a seasoned mid-career illustrator —Talking about it with someone who understands is the best (and fastest) way to get unblocked.

Whatever's getting you stuck in your creative work, as your coach, my job is to help you get unstuck — through helping you define clearer goals, name the obstacles, and showing you how you have what it takes to blast through them.

Career Direction

If you're feeling lost in your creative career, coaching can help you find your way.

Feeling lost doesn't mean you're far from where you want to be — you've just lost sight of what you want. A coaching session with me can help you rediscover what that is.

I'll work with you to clarify your goals and to connect where you are to where you want to be with some concrete next steps.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a Portfolio Review and a Coaching Session?

A Portfolio Review is built around your work. You send it ahead of time, and we spend the hour going through it in detail. A Coaching Session is more open, but is usually built around one or more pressing questions you're asking right now. It could be about a big goal, a project you're stuck on, or where your career is heading. If you're not sure which fits, please feel free to ask me in an email.

Do I need to have a finished portfolio to book a review?

No. Work in progress, a handful of pieces, or a portfolio you're not happy with yet all work fine. If you don't have an online portfolio, you can send me a selection of images that best represent you as an illustrator at this moment, by shared drive, or as a PDF attachment in an email after you book.

Will I definitely get hired or land clients after this?

No. While coaching can help you find the keys to success through honest, experienced feedback, there's no way I can guarantee it! Beware of anyone who does.

How does the call work?

You'll complete your booking through Calendly, choosing an available date and time, and then pay to lock in your appointment. The call happens over Google Meet at the scheduled time. For a Portfolio Review, you'll send your work ahead of the call so I can review it in advance. Either way, I always send you about 5 individualized questions for you to respond to before the call, which helps us get right to the good stuff on the call.

What if I need to reschedule or cancel?

For Single Sessions — Cancellations and rescheduling requests must be made with at least 24 hours' notice. No refunds will be issued for late cancellations, late rescheduling, or no-shows.

For Multi-Session Packages — If you cancel before your first session with at least 24 hours' notice, you'll receive a full refund. A missed or late-cancelled session voids only that session — remaining sessions in the package are unaffected.

How does the 3-session package work? Do I book all three at once?

No — you don't have to book all three at once. When booking, you pay for all three up front, but then book and schedule each session individually as you need it, spaced out however works for you.

Does the Multi-session package expire?

Yes — sessions must be used within 12 months of purchase.

What if I only use part of the package and want a refund?

Once your first session has taken place, the package is non-refundable — unused sessions may still be booked until they expire 12 months from purchase, but are not eligible for a cash refund.

What should I prepare beforehand?

For a Portfolio Review: send your portfolio or work samples in advance. For a Coaching Session: come with a specific question or topic — the more specific, the more useful the hour.

In either case, I will send you personlized questions to help me get to know you more and to help you get more clarity on what you'd like to go through on the call.

What time zone are sessions in?

I'm based in Vancouver, BC, which is on Pacific Time (UTC−7) year-round.

Calendly automatically shows available times in your local time zone when you book, so there's no conversion needed on your end.

Reviews from My Coaching Clients

“Tom's approach was calm, realistic and allowed me to look at my illustration from different perspectives. Tom gave me some questions to think about and provided feedback on the artwork I presented, which helped me make a plan to move forward.”

“Tom is a master at becoming unstuck. I booked a session with Tom seeking advice on a composition I was wrestling with in a personal illustration, and just talking through it with him untangled my thoughts and allowed me to see the finish line. His ability to identify and articulate the problem and potential solutions is invaluable.”

Brandon Campbell
